Today is Single Awareness day aka Valentine’s day. I never really understood why we need a specific day on the calendar to be sweet to your loved one. Send a pretty bouquet to your girlfriend on Valentines may be nice, but she will appreciate it much more if it’s on a random day, with no particular reason. According to Wikipedia: “it all started with a British publisher issuing The Young Man’s Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called mechanical valentines, and a reduction in postal rates in the next century ushered in the less personal but easier practice of mailing Valentines”. So even before becoming a tradition, it was already commercialized. Like the wedding industry, love has always been a very wealthy industry; maybe it’s a good sign after all, a sign that love is more and more in the air.
